Today there are many families who are created through adoption.  Some children are adopted at birth, others when they are older.  Some are adopted in this country, others internationally.  Some are traumatized, abused or neglected, the result of rape, or orphaned by war or a fatal accident.  Some are adopted by stepparents; some are born as the result of a sperm donor.

Some parents adopt because they are infertile or they want to add to their existing family, while others adopt because they are a gay or lesbian couple.  Still more adopt because they want to give homes to children who need families rather than give birth themselves.  In fact, there are many reasons why adoptions occur.  Regardless of how a family has come to adopt, there are numerous milestones, issues and themes that they must face in their day-to-day lives.  These issues will impact anyone whose life has been touched by adoption.  Often people need the help and support of others to successfully face these challenges.

I have been working within the world of adoption for over 17 years, in my private practice as well as with the California Department of Children & Family Services and numerous private adoption agencies.  I work with the entire Adoption Triad, and with both adults and children, exploring such concerns as grief and loss, attachment, parenting, identity and reunion.  I also provide trainings and seminars for both families and professionals.  Through my long-standing association with Kinship Center, I am a Certified Trainer as well as a Trainer of Trainers for their ACT:  An Adoption and Permanency Curriculum for Child Welfare and Mental Health Professionals.  As an adoptee who has been in reunion with my birth family, I offer a personal understanding of the field and the themes it elicits, along with my years of professional experience and expertise.

“I realized at the start that whether a child is biological or adopted, one does not know all the ingredients in the package. That is what growth is all about. A child is the slowest flower in the world, opening petal by petal, revealing the developing personality within.”  - Robert Klose
